Roofing Dumpster Rental in McHenry & Lake County

roofers tearing shingles off a roof

Tearing off a roof produces more weight than almost any other home project. Doc's Dumpsters delivers roll-off dumpsters sized for shingle tear-offs to homeowners and roofing contractors across McHenry and Lake County, with same-day delivery in most areas. Prices start at $390 and include delivery, pickup, and a set weight allowance, so you know the cost before the first shingle comes off.

What Size Dumpster Do You Need for a Roof?

For most roofs, the weight of the shingles decides the size, not the space they take up. Use your roof size in squares (1 square = 100 square feet of roof) and the number of shingle layers coming off.

1 square = 100 sq ft of roof. Asphalt shingles are not allowed in 30 yard dumpsters. Roof over 45 squares? Call (815) 385-5025.

Up to 20 squares10 yard$3902 tons
21 to 32 squares15 yard$4503 tons
33 to 45 squares20 yard$5204 tons

Estimates assume about 350 lbs per square per layer, including felt and nails. Not sure how many squares your roof is? Your roofer's estimate will list it, or call us and we'll help you pick.

Why Weight Matters More Than Size on a Roofing Job

Asphalt shingles weigh roughly 250 to 400 lbs per square, and architectural shingles sit at the heavy end. A typical 25-square roof with one layer can weigh close to 4.5 tons before you add decking or gutters. Every dumpster includes a set tonnage, and weight over that limit is billed extra. Choosing by weight up front keeps the price you were quoted the price you pay.

Roofing Dumpsters for Homeowners

Replacing your own roof, or hiring a roofer who doesn't supply a dumpster? We'll drop the container in your driveway where it's easiest to load from the roofline, and pick it up as soon as you call. Most single-layer tear-offs on McHenry County homes fit in a 15 or 20 yard dumpster.

Roofing Dumpsters for Contractors

We work with roofing crews throughout McHenry and Lake County. Our 10 yard dumpster is low and compact, which makes it a good fit for tight driveways and heavy tear-offs. Same-day delivery in most areas means your crew isn't waiting on a container to start, and fast swap-outs keep larger jobs moving.

What Can Go in a Roofing Dumpster

These are accepted:

  • Asphalt and architectural shingles
  • Felt paper and synthetic underlayment
  • Flashing, drip edge, and nails
  • Roof decking and plywood
  • Old gutters and downspouts

These cost extra or aren't allowed: tires, batteries, hazardous chemicals, paint or paint cans, appliances, electronics, mattresses, and couches. See our full terms on the Request Service page.

Tips for a Smooth Tear-Off

Put plywood under the dumpster's wheels if you're worried about your driveway.

  • Lay tarps over landscaping between the house and the dumpster to catch stray nails.
  • Spread shingles evenly instead of piling them at one end.
  • Keep debris level with the top of the dumpster; overloaded containers can't be hauled safely.
  • If the dumpster has to sit on the street, check with your village about a permit first.
